Serb tennis star Jelena Jankovic gets through to the semis
Serb tennis star Jelena Jankovic goes through to the women's semi-finals after her opponent Elena Dementieva had to give up on the game due to an injured back.
Jelena Jankovic, 23, was in the lead with a 6-1 3-1 score when Elena Dementieva, who had received treatment for her back earlier on, knew she could not go on with the match any longer.
Jelena Jankovic next faces Russian player Vera Zvonareva who had defeated her compatriot Dinara Safina 7-5 6-4 to set up a quarter-final game against Jelena Jankovic.
It had been a real struggle for world number 11 Elena Dementieva and she made 26 unforced errors before she was forced to retire, but Jelena Jankovic also had her problems, and she had said: "I'm fighting. I'm sick. I cannot play, I cannot breathe on the court."
And Jelena Jankovic added: "It was my game overall that was out there on the court, and I was really happy with that. Unfortunately she stopped the match in the middle of the second set, and there's nothing I could do."
