Russian tennis star Marat Safin withdraws from Queen's

marat safinRussian tennis star Marat Safin has been forced to withdraw his name from taking part in the Aegon Championships at Queen's Club because he has injured his back.

29-year-old Safin, who was seeded seven, had been given a bye in the first round and had been expected to be playing against Xavier Malisse from Belgium on the centre court on Wednesday.

Safin is currently ranked at world number 20 in the tennis ratings, and in his past career he got as high as number one in the sport in late 2000 and early 2001.

Safin was also the first Russian tennis player to ever get through to the semi-finals of Wimbledon, which he accomplished last year.

Safin has won two Grand Slams in his impressive career as a professional tennis player, however, he has already announced that he intends retiring at the end of the current season.
