Russian tennis star Marat Safin is not playing again this season
Russian tennis star Marat Safin has decided he won't take part in the Davis Cup final against the US and won't be playing again this season.
Marat Safin was the winner of the deciding rubber in last year's Davis Cup final and he won again when Russia defeated France in the quarter-finals this year.
However, Marat Safin has been battling to recapture his past performance ability and personal fitness this season. Marat Safin was beaten in the first round of this week's Madrid Masters.
Marat Safin explained on his site on the Internet: "Marat decided there are four better players than him who are in form."
And it goes on to explain his recent problems have been due to fatigue following a Tibetan mountaineering expedition: "His mountain adventure - which he thoroughly enjoyed - took him out of his rhythm and also left him with no energy."
