Russian tennis star Dinara Safina wins German Open
Russian tennis star Dinara Safina won the German Open women's singles final when she defeated Elena Dementieva over the course of three sets.
22-year-old Safina fought back from a poor start to the game and went on to beat her fellow countrywoman 3-6 6-2 6-2.
Earlier on on her way to getting through to the finals she had beaten world number one Justine Henin and Serena Williams but this didn't show in the first set but she recovered her form in the second and broke twice in the deciding set before winning.
26-year-old Dementieva had already beaten world number two Ana Ivanovic in straight sets in the semi-final on Saturday but she lost to Dinara Safina.
Admitting that she had started well but then didn't keep it up against Safina she said:"I feel, after the first set, I let myself down."
