Russian star Maria Sharapova faces American Serena Williams
American tennis star Serena Williams will be playing against Russian Maria Sharapova in the Family Circle Cup last eight after she managed to ignore a sprained ankle that was troubling her to go on and defeat Katarina Srebotnik.
Serena Williams, who was seeded five, was clearly not up to her usual form but she still managed to claim a 4-6 6-4 6-3 win.
Serena Williams admitted: "I just kept making errors and it wasn't pretty out there."
Serena Williams' future opponent Maria Sharapova later won against Taiana Perebiynis of the Ukraine 7-5 6-2.
Maria Sharapova is going after her fourth title this year and Serena Williams admitted she had some doubts still about how her ankle problem might affect her when she faces Maria Sharapova in the quarter-finals on Friday.
Earlier this year in the 2008 Australian Open quarterfinal, Maria Sharapova had defeated Justine Henin 6-4, 6-0. Justine Henin had been the world number one, but Maria Sharapova won her third victory in nine games against her Belgian opponent.
