Russian star Maria Sharapova beats Anabel Medina Garrigues

masha Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova took nearly three hours to defeat her opponent Anabel Medina Garrigues at the Amelia Island Championships but eventually she did so with a 7-6 5-7 7-6 victory.

Maria Sharapova, reflecting on the battle she had said: "In those situations, it all comes down to the heart and how tough you are. The forehands or backhands don't mean much after three hours."

Maria Sharapova knew she had messed up when she let Anabel Medina Garrigues to make a come back into the game after she had won the first set and she added: "There were a lot of ups and downs in the match. I think I should have won the match in two sets to be honest, but I stopped hitting the ball."

But eventually Maria Sharapova created a 5-3 lead in the final set but then got distracted by a line call in the ninth game and had to serve to stay in the march at 5-6. Nevertheless, Maria Sharapova won the tie-break 7-1.

Maria Sharapova will next face 10th seed Alona Bondarenko.
