Roger Federer wants to equal Pete Sampras' record
Swiss tennis star Roger Federer is aiming to equal Pete Sampras' Grand Slam record after he gained his fifth consecutive title at Wimbledon on Sunday.
Roger Federer's five-set win against Rafael Nadal was his 11th Grand Slam win, and this means he is three behind American legend Pete Sampras' total of 14.
"I'd love to equal his record," said Roger Federer, and he added: "I definitely feel I'm mentally and physically still fit to go on for many more years to come."
Pete Sampras has won seven Wimbledon titles and Roger Federer described him as "maybe the greatest player we've ever had".
Roger Federer went on to say: "To break his record is not the easiest thing,"
"It has taken me five Wimbledons and three Australian Opens and three US Opens just to get close to him. It just shows what a great player he was."
