Roger Federer claims Sportsman of the Year award at Laureus World Sports Awards
Swiss tennis star Roger Federer claimed his second successive Sportsman of the Year title at the Laureus World Sports awards when he was honoured for winning Wimbledon and the US Open in 2005.
However, tennis star Andrew Murray missed out on an award for Britain when he was beaten by clay-court expert Rafael Nadal to the best newcomer gong and golfer Colin Montgomerie was edged out by another tennis player, Martina Hingis, in the Comeback of the Year category.
Roger Federer, 24, heads to the French Open next week and is aiming to become the first man to hold all four Grand Slams at the same time since Australian player Rod Laver back in 1969.
Tennis legend John McEnroe believes Roger Federer has it in him to become the most successful Grand Slam player ever.
"Roger Federer is the outstanding tennis player of his generation. In fact he is probably the outstanding individual sportsman of his generation across all sports," said John McEnroe, who is a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy.
More than 700 sports writers and editors from around the world selected the nominees for the Laureus World Sports Awards and the 42 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy chose the winners.
