Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray and men's tennis face major changes next season
Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray will face major changes next season as the forthcoming men's tennis tour tries to increase its public appeal.
The ATP intends starting more tournaments on Sundays, introducing more round-robin formats and reducing the number of best-of-five-set finals, and there will also be the first widespread prize money increase since 2000.
The French Open this year was the first Grand Slam tournament to start on a Sunday, which provided greater TV exposure.
The round-robin set-up, with the top player in each pool progressing to knockout rounds, will be tried in 2007, with further plans to use it more in 2008 and 2009.
The advantage of this format of tennis is that if a popular player loses his first match, fans are still able to see him play again.
Some seven-day ATP tournaments will be increasing to eight days in 2007 and there will be Sunday starts everywhere by 2009.
