Rafael Nadal withdraws from Australian Open due to injury
Tennis star Rafael Nadal has confirmed that he will not be playing at next week's Australian Open because of a foot injury.
19-year-old Rafael Nadal has not played since becoming injured at
October's Madrid Masters. The problem has since caused a calf muscle
strain on top of the original damage.
"It's clear that if I went to Australia I wouldn't be at my best level
in tennis terms or physically," the Spanish tennis star told sports
paper Marca.
Rafael Nadal plans to make his return at the tournament in Marseille on 13 February.
Rafael Nadal made the decision to withdraw from the year's first Grand
Slam event after practicing with Gustavo Kuerten for 90 minutes in
Barcelona on Monday.
"I'm a pessimist," Rafael Nadal said, despite beating the Brazilian player in their session.
"Training for an hour and a half is not the same as playing a five-set match in a Grand Slam," Rafael Nadal added.
