Probe launched into suspected poisoning of Tommy Haas
A probe has been launched by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to investigate whether it was true that Tommy Haas was poisoned whilst taking part in the Davis Cup semi-final defeat by Russia.
Tommy Haas' team-mate Alexander Waske had said to the German tabloid newspaper Bild that an unnamed Russian had hinted that Tommy Haas had been poisoned in Moscow, and an ITF spokeswoman said: "We take this very seriously."
Alexander Waske said: "I spoke with a Russian from Moscow at the Davis Cup. He said completely casually that Haas had been poisoned."
However, on Thursday the German tennis federation stated that there was no medical evidence to support the claims.
German tennis star Tommy Haas, 29, will nevertheless travel to New York on Friday to have hair and blood tests done.
Tommy Haas had been defeated in the opening singles match in straight sets and was forced to miss the rest of the event due to a bad case of gastro-enteritis, which was later thought to be poisoning.
Tommy Haas said: "I want to find out if any poison can be traced or confirmed."
