Monica Seles to retire from tennis
Monica Seles has decided to retire from tennis and has announced her decision.
Yugoslavia-born Monica Seles, 34, is a former world number one tennis player and she won nine Grand Slam singles titles in her career. However, Monica Seles hasn't taken part in professional tennis since June 2003 due to a foot injury.
Monica Seles claimed her first Grand Slam win back in 1990 at the age of only 17 and she went on to top the world rankings the year after that, but then in April 1993 she was stabbed whilst on a tennis court in Germany and was away from the sport for over two years.
Monica Seles made her comeback in 1995 and went on to win one final Grand Slam title when she took the Australian Open in 1996. Monica Seles won a very impressive haul of four Australian, three French and two US Open titles.
Monica Seles said: "Tennis has been and will always be a huge part of my life. I have for some time considered a return to professional play, but I have now decided not to pursue that."
