Martina Hingis' bid for a title ends in defeat
Martina Hingis' attempt at a first singles title since making a return
to tennis has ended with a 6-2 6-0 loss when she was beaten by Elena
Dementieva in the Pan Pacific Open final.
Russian Elena Dementieva had beaten Martina Hingis in 2002 in what was
the Swiss tennis star's last match before chronic ankle problems forced
her to retire early from the sport.
And it was clear that Elena Dementieva had too much power for Martina Hingis again in Tokyo on Sunday.
Elena Dementieva will climb to eighth in the world after her first title since 2004, when she reached two Grand Slam finals.
two Grand Slam finals.
Martina Hingis said: "I've been playing well for the last five or six weeks. I guess I just faced one Russian too many."
But she appeared not worried by the defeat, saying she was pleased with
the way her comeback after a three-year absence had gone so far.
Martina Hingis reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, and
beat top-seeded Maria Sharapova in Tokyo on Saturday's semi-final.
