Mario Ancic secures a Hamburg Masters spot
Croatian tennis player Mario Ancic was in trouble for the second day in a row before defeating Nikolay Davydenko to secure a surprise semi-final spot at the Hamburg Masters.
Mario Ancic was a set and a break down against fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko but came back fighting for a 5-7 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 victory.
Mario Ancic now goes on to meet Tommy Robredo, who beat David Ferrer 7-6 (10-8) 6-4.
The Czech player Radek Stepanek beat Max Mirnyi 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 to set up a game against Argentinean Jose Acasuso, who had beaten Fernando Verdasco 6-1 6-7 (6-8) 6-3.
And Mario Ancic was almost beaten by American James Blake on Thursday when Blake served for the match and his performance has been improved by two fighting displays on clay.
"I showed that not only can I play good tennis, but I have become mentally tough," said Mario Ancic. "I have been coming from difficult situations.
"It is even better that I have done it to two top ten players and on clay which I would not pick as my best surface," Mario Ancic added.
