Maria Sharapova to make Fed Cup debut for Russia
Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova will make her Fed Cup debut for her country in their quarter-final tie against Israel on Saturday.
Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova will be joining players Elena Vesnina, Anna Chakvetadze and Dinara Safina as they make their way to Israel on 2-3 February. Maria Sharapova says that all the rumours about her team-mates not liking her after she was repeatedly withdrawn from the Fed Cup squads is a load of rubbish.
Maria Sharapova, 20, is reported to have said: "The majority of us have a wonderful relationship, we do."
However, Maria Sharapova had been criticised by Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anna Chakvetadze when she had been asked to cheer the team on from the sidelines in the 2007 Fed Cup final win over Italy in Moscow. At that time Maria Sharapova was suffering a shoulder injury and so didn't play.
Maria Sharapova, however, added: "I don't know what you saw, but we all went to team dinners. I have really good relationships."
