Maria Sharapova thrashes Lindsay Davenport
Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova easily beat American Lindsay Davenport, and won the contest between the former world number ones 6-1 6-3 in the Australian Open second round.
Lindsay Davenport was playing for the first time in a Grand Slam on her comeback to tennis after the birth of her son Jagger in June last year, but she was defeated in the first five games.
Maria Sharapova explained: "I approached it like a final. From the day I found out I might play her I started working towards her game. I wanted my coach to hit the ball as hard as he can for five days because she's one of the biggest hitters out there."
Maria Sharapova next plays against compatriot Elena Vesnina in round three.
But Maria Sharapova isn't likely to be worried at all about her next game having beaten Lindsay Davenport who was expected to have been an equal match.
