Maria Sharapova qualifies Megastar tennis player and defending champion Maria Sharapova has become the third marquee name to gain a spot in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche at STAPLES Center from Nov. 8-13. Kim Clijsters and Lindsay Davenport will join her. Maria Sharapova, aged 18, will try in Los Angeles to become the second player (and first since Chris Evert in 1972-73) to win back-to-back titles in their first two appearances at the Championships.
Maria Sharapova, who became an internationally recognized star when she won the 2004 Wimbledon singles title at only 17, has been one of the most consistent players on this season's Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. She won three titles and at least got as far as the quarterfinals in all 13 events she has played in. In next week's Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Filderstadt, Germany she is expected to be the top seed.
Maria Sharapova has already reached the top of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour world rankings, and she has remained there ever since the last rankings on September 12th. Maria Sharapova is the first Russian woman player and the fifth youngest professional ever to hold the coveted No. 1 spot. Now that she has qualified for the Championships, she will try to become the fifth player overall to win consecutive season-ending titles.
I am so excited to return to Los Angeles for the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships and defend my title. Winning the Championships last year ranks as one of my greatest accomplishments and I look forward to closing out my season again at the STAPLES Center," Maria Sharapova said.
