Maria Sharapova beats Jelena Kostanic at Australian Open
Despite the hot Melbourne sun Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova went
through to the Australian Open fourth round by beating Croatian player
Jelena Kostanic.
Maria Sharapova's 6-0 6-1 win over Jelena Kostanic has set up a possible meeting with Serena Williams.
Maria Sharapova, who lost to Serena Williams in last year's
semi-finals, spent only 68 minutes on Rod Laver Arena in temperatures
that reached as high as 31C (88F).
The American defending champion later faces Daniela Hantuchova.
Jelena Kostanic only coped with avoiding the dreaded 'double
bagel' by holding her opening service game in the second set but Maria
Sharapova reeled off the next five games to complete her win.
But Maria Sharapova said the win was not as easy as the scoreline suggested.
"I wouldn't say that was really easy," said former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova.
"Mentally it is pretty tough when you know you've got a very patient
opponent and you know that it's really hot," Maria Sharapova added.
