Maria Sharapova beats Dominika Cibulkova in Amelia Island

masha Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova made her first tournament win on clay when she fought her way to a straight-sets win against Slovakian player Dominika Cibulkova in the final of the Amelia Island Championships.

Maria Sharapova claimed the first set on a tie-break before going on to win the second 6-3 against 18-year-old Dominika Cibulkova.

This victory has been Maria Sharapova's third WTA Tour win so far this year after she also claimed the Australian Open as winner and an event in Doha. Maria Sharapova said proudly: "This is definitely a big plus."

Dominika Cibulkova, who was making her debut WTA Tour final, had plenty of chances of winning too and she led 4-2 in the first-set tiebreaker before making two unforced errors that allowed Maria Sharapova to battle back.

Dominika Cibulkova acknowledged she had missed out when she had the chances and she said: "I missed so many easy shots. I made quite stupid mistakes today."
