Marat Safin easily reaches round two at Estoril Open
Russian tennis player Marat Safin easily reached round two of the Estoril Open with an impressive win over Italian qualifier Fabio Fognini.
Marat Safin was making a return to the sport after a serious knee injury with a 6-1 6-4 victory on the clay.
Marat Safin, ranked 49 in the world, will now face second seed and fellow Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the last 16.
Top seeded Argentinean David Nalbandian was in mixed form but went on to beat French player Nicolas Mahut 7-5 7-5.
David Nalbandian, a champion in Estoril in 2002, was in trouble early on in both sets but the unseeded Nicolas Mahut's weak serve allowed the Argentinean player back into the game and to triumph.
In spite of winning at Estoril, Marat Safin said he was struggling with a lack of confidence after being away from the sport for seven months due to a knee injury.
"I'm having trouble getting my confidence back," said Marat Safin. "But I'm working hard and trying to do it.
"I'm here, I'm trying to play and win as many matches as possible.
"Against Fognini there was so much wind, it was tough. I was lucky to win in straight sets," Marat Safin added.
