Lleyton Hewitt is ready for the Australian Davis Cup
Tennis star Lleyton Hewitt has announced he is ready for the Australian
Davis Cup quarter-final against Belarus after missing the first round
in Switzerland in January citing an injured ankle, but he came in for
criticism for playing in a tournament in America the week after.
However, former world number one Lleyton Hewitt has told Australia's
captain John Fitzgerald he is ready to play against Belarus on 7-9
April.
John Fitzgerald said: "Lleyton is keen to play Davis Cup again and that is just great news for the team."
Lleyton Hewitt is the most successful Australian Davis Cup singles
player ever, with a 27-6 win-loss record and he has played in four
finals for Australia, winning against France in 1999 and Spain in 2003.
However, his future in the tournament has been thrown into doubt
following a heated argument with Australian tennis officials in
January.
Lleyton Hewitt said not enough was being done to help local players get
ready for the Australian Open and in particular he claimed that the
speed of the courts in Melbourne was not helping him at his home grand
slam event.
Lleyton Hewitt also suggested the Davis Cup was no longer top of his priorities.
But John Fitzgerald was quick to defend Lleyton Hewitt's commitment to
his country and said: "Lleyton has told me he wants to play and that's
genuine. His record speaks for itself."
Lleyton Hewitt's announcement that he will play again for
Australia comes after he got through to the quarter-finals of the
Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas.
