Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams to miss Miami due to injury

lindsaydavenport Lindsay Davenport has withdrawn from the Nasdaq-100 tournament in Miami because of a back injury.

She has a bulging disc in her lower back, which caused her problems at last week's Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells.

"I was hoping to have recovered in time (for Miami) but unfortunately I am not yet ready to play at the top of my game," said Lindsay Davenport, 29.

Fellow American player Serena Williams is also out of the event.

Serena Williams, 24, whose ranking has dropped to a seven-year low of 58, gave a knee injury and lack of training as her reasons.

"I am very disappointed but I need more time before I am able to compete at the highest level," said Serena Williams.

Serena Williams has not played since the Australian Open in January and has been fined by the WTA for withdrawing from several tournaments this year.
