Justine Henin-Hardenne beats Maria Sharapova in Madrid
Belgian tennis star Justine Henin-Hardenne has beaten Maria Sharapova and qualified for the final of the WTA Championships in Madrid and with the guarantee of world number one ranking at the end of this year.
Justine Henin-Hardenne dominated from the start and battled on through to a 6-2 7-6 (7-5) win.
Justine Henin-Hardenne had to defeat Russian star Maria Sharapova and reach the final to take top spot and Sharapova was the only player to win all three round-robin matches and was tipped as favourite to beat Henin-Hardenne, who was playing her first event since the US Open.
But Maria Sharapova wasn't on good form from the start of their semi-final and failed to find any rhythm on her groundstrokes.
Justine Henin-Hardenne grabbed two breaks of serve and, although Maria Sharapova got one back, she could not save the set. Eventually it came down to a tie-break and Maria Sharapova's errors gave Justine Henin-Hardenne two match points, the second of which she converted.
