Justine Henin-Hardenne beats Kim Clijsters
Justine Henin-Hardenne is just one victory away from defending her French Open title after a surprising semi-final win over Kim Clijsters.
Justine Henin-Hardenne will now face Svetlana Kuznetsova in Saturday's final after sealing a 6-3 6-2 win.
The game with Kim Clijsters was evenly-fought until Justine Henin-Hardenne broke to take a 5-3 lead in the first set but from then onwards it was a one-way flow and second seeded Clijsters managed to win only two of the last eight games.
It was a miserable 23rd birthday for KimClijsters, who would have replaced Amelie Mauresmo as world number one if she had beaten Justine Henin-Hardenne.
"I think she is by far the best clay-court player," said Kim Clijsters.
"The difference between her and the other players is that she moves so well, not that she hits harder.
"You think you hit a winner but the ball comes back. I was dominating points but I couldn't finish them off because she's a good defender," Kim Clijsters added.
