Israeli tennis star Anna Smashnova to retire
Belarusian-born Israeli tennis star Anna Smashnova, who is a former number one player for her country, has announced that she will retire after this year's Wimbledon championships.
Born in Minsk, Anna Smashnova, 30, became the number one junior in the Soviet Union at the age of only 10 and went on to win 12 women's tour titles during her 16-year career.
"After Wimbledon I won't play any more professional tennis," Anna Smashnova said and added: "I have completed one life chapter and now it's time for a new chapter."
A year after emigrating to Israel with her family from Belarus, Anna Smashnova won the junior French Open title aged 14 in 1991.
Anna Smashnova's last major achievement in tennis was the singles title she won in Budapest in 2006 when she defeated Dominguez Lino 6-1 6-3 in the final.
