Guillermo Cañas ends Roger Federer's run of success
Born in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires and named after Argentinean tennis star Guillermo Vilas, Guillermo Cañas has ended Roger Federer's 41-match unbeaten run of success with a surprising 7-5 6-2 second-round victory at the Indian Wells Masters.
World number one Roger Federer, who has won the tournament for three years in a row, had been undefeated since last August.
Although he hadn't been playing up to his usual standards throughout the game Roger Federer refused to blame the pressure of the unbeaten run for his failure this time and he said: "It just shows you how tough it is. It was just a grind for me from the start. It had to happen so it's OK."
Guillermo Cañas, 29, the former world number eight, had only made a comeback to playing last September after a 15-month ban for doping offences, and so he was delighted with his victory and he proudly said: "It's great to beat the number one, I feel perfect."
