French tennis star Amelie Mauresmo loses to Patty Schnyder
French tennis star Amelie Mauresmo has got off to a bad start to the new season and New Year when she was defeated 6-4 6-4 by Patty Schnyder at the Australian Hardcourt Championships.
Amelie Mauresmo, who is a former world number one, had recovered from a shoulder injury and was playing in her first tournament since October.
Swiss star Patty Schnyder nevertheless beat Amelie Mauresmo in 76 minutes in the quarter-finals of the event.
A disappointed Amelie Mauresmo is reported to have said: "I made too many mistakes, especially in that first set."
Amelie Mauresmo had got into difficulty when she lost the opening five games in the first set and after that was not able to fight her way back and so she lost to Patty Schnyder.
Patty Schnyder will next be playing against China's unseeded Li Na.
