France's Amelie Mauresmo beats injured Kim Clijsters at Australian Open
French tennis player Amelie Mauresmo reached her second Australian Open
final when Kim Clijsters was forced to leave the game due to injury,
leaving Mauresmo leading 5-7 6-2 3-2.
Kim Clijsters was struggling with the back and hip injuries she already
had when she went into the tournament and then she twisted her ankle
midway through the third set.
Kim Clijsters received treatment for the injury and tried to carry on
but was forced to retire after one more point. She later said she felt
she could have gone onto win the match against Amelie Mauresmo if she
hadn't twisted her ankle.
Amelie Mauresmo, the 1999 finalist, will now be facing Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final.
Of the sudden end to her match against Kim Clijsters, Amelie
Mauresmo said: "It's very strange. We had such a great battle till she
twisted the ankle."
Kim Clijsters' retirement might have come as something of a
relief to the French player, who had been struggling against her
opponent despite her injured state.
Kim Clijsters' only consolation is that she will be the replacement for
Lindsay Davenport as world number one when the new rankings are
released on Monday.
