Flavia Pennetta beats Martina Hingis at Australian championships
Former world number one, 25-year-old Martina Hingis lost to Italy's
Flavia Pennetta in the semi-finals of her first tournament for more
than three years.
The Swiss tennis player cruised through the first set but ran out of
steam after losing a second-set tie-break at the Australian Hardcourt
Championships.
Martina Hingis, who lost 6-1 6-7 (2-7) 2-6, then said she would pull out of her doubles match on Friday with an injury.
Martina Hingis admitted that her return to action after such an
extended lay-off has put a strain on her body, with a hip problem
troubling her throughout the semi-final.
"It was just a lot of tennis this week, I'm not used to that," Martina Hingis said.
"And I'm not 18 any more, and I can't recover that quickly. I have to look after myself a little bit now.
"You can't expect everything to be perfect with your body when you just
haven't done that much in three years, but I don't want to take
anything away from Pennetta, she played a great match.
"Still, if I would evaluate this tournament right away, I'm very happy. I'm very positive with what I've achieved this week."
Martina Hingis, the winner of five Grand Slam titles, continues to make
her comeback in the Medibank International in Sydney next week.
