Electronic Hawk-eye technology to judge tennis line calls
Electronic Hawk-eye technology is being brought into use to judge line
calls at the Nasdaq 100 tournament later this month and similar
technology has already been in use in other sports, however, the Miami
tournament will be its debut in a tour event.
"This is one of the most exciting things to happen in my 20 years in tennis," said tennis star Andre Agassi.
This year's US Open will be the first Grand Slam event to make use of
the system but individual tournaments can make their own decisions over
whether or not to employ the technology.
The Hawk-eye electronic system will be used on both the men's and
women's tour, and it has been very well received by tennis players.
"As a player, I want to know that line calls are as accurate as technology will allow," said Maria Sharapova.
"In that sense, this announcement is great news for all players," Maria Sharapova added.
"This is perhaps the most significant change to the game since the
tiebreaker", said the US Tennis Association's Arlen Kantarian.
The International Tennis Federation approved the technology in 2005 and
it was first tested at the end-of-season Champions Tour's event at the
Royal Albert Hall.
