Chris Guccione and Lleyton Hewitt give Australia the Davis Cup lead
Tennis stars Chris Guccione and Lleyton Hewitt gave Australia a comfortable 2-0 lead on the opening day of their Davis Cup quarter-final against Belarus.
Chris Guccione, 20, overcame Max Mirnyi 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 7-5 3-6 6-4 in nearly four hours and Lleyton Hewitt then ignored critical remarks before the match from Vladimir Voltchkov to beat him 6-2 6-1 6-2 on a day when the weather wasn't good in Melbourne due to wind and the cold.
"It was pretty tough conditions out there," Lleyton Hewitt said. "I just tried to stay mentally tough and hang in."
The winning player over three days will face Croatia or Argentina in the semi-finals in September.
In the meantime, Croatian number one and team captain Ivan Ljubicic will open against Agustin Calleri in Zagreb, before Mario Ancic faces David Nalbandian.
And elsewhere Andy Roddick and James Blake lead the American challenge at Rancho Mirage, California, against Chile, who are represented by Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu.
As a point of interest, the tie will see Andy Roddick working again with Dean Goldfine, the coach he fired back in February.
