Bulgarian teenage tennis player Sesil Karatantcheva appeals against drugs ban
Bulgarian 16-year-old tennis player Sesil Karatantcheva has appealed
against a two-year ban for using performance-enhancing prohibited
substances.
The verdict was announced on 11 January after Sesil Karatantcheva had twice tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone.
"The player requests the annulment of the decision challenged," said a Court of Arbitration for Sport statement.
Sesil Karatantcheva has stated that the high levels of nandrolone in
her body at the time were due to a pregnancy, which subsequently ended
in miscarriage.
"She puts forward that the presence of norandrosterone is due mainly to
her pregnancy condition and to the regular absorption of food
supplements," confirmed the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The ITF's independent Anti-Doping Tribunal turned down Sesil
Karatantcheva's claims in January but the tennis player's lawyer said
at the time they were optimistic that an appeal would be successful.
"We have very strong evidence, things which were not taken into account at the hearing of the tribunal," said Darina Zinovieva.
Sesil Karatantcheva , who is regarded as one of the fastest rising
stars in tennis, first tested positive at the French Open, where she
was victorious over Venus Williams before losing out in the fourth
round.
Sesil Karatantcheva has promised she will be returning to the sport even if she loses in the appeal.
"I'll keep training, I'm only 16. I'll be back, and my return will be thunderous," Sesil Karatantcheva told a news conference.
