Belgian tennis star Justine Henin retires

henin Belgian tennis star Justine Henin has announced that she is retiring from the sport with immediate effect.

The 25-year-old world number one made her news public on Wednesday in her home country when she said: "It's the end of a wonderful adventure but it's something I have been thinking about for a long time."
And Henin maintains she will not reconsider her decision.

Justine Henin was top of the WTA rankings for the 117th time this week, but she nevertheless withdrew from the Rome Masters giving fatigue as her reason.

Henin has had a bad run of defeats this season, getting beaten four times in the same number of months.

Russian tennis player Dinara Safina beat Justine Henin in the third round of the German Open just last week in only her second match after a month away from sport due to an injured knee.

Henin's surprising revelation comes less than two weeks before the French Open starts, which in the past she has won four times, and in every one of the last three years' events.
