Top-seeded Belgian Kim Clijsters was among Wednesday's winners at the
$170,000 Gaz de France Stars tennis tournament in Hasselt, Belgium.
The U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters clocked Russian Ekaterina Bychkova
6-1, 6-3 in opening-round action at Grenslandhallen Hasselt. Kim
Clijsters has won 22 of her last 23 matches and is seeking her fifth
title in six events.
A pair of women secured quarterfinal berths on Day 3 here, as
third-seeded Francesca Schiavone handled fellow Italian Maria Elena
Camerin 7-5, 6-1 and German Julia Schruff subdued Belgian Els Callens
6-3, 6-1.
35-year-old Els Callens played her final singles match on
Wednesday, and she will retire from the WTA Tour at the end of this
event. She's still playing doubles alongside her countrywoman Kim
Clijsters this week.
Els Callens never captured a singles title in her 16 years on tour, but she has compiled 10 doubles crowns.
Eighth-seeded Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik reached the second round with a 6-3, 6-0 pasting of Italian Mara Santangelo.
Additional first-round wins came for Croat Karolina Sprem, American
Meilen Tu and Italian Roberta Vinci. Sprem will face the former world
