Belfast tennis star Claire Curran quits Wimbledon
Belfast tennis star Claire Curran has announced her retirement from professional tennis after she was beaten in the mixed doubles second round match at Wimbledon on Tuesday.
Claire Curran and British tennis player James Auckland were defeated 7-5 6-2 by the number 12 seeds Todd Perry from Australia and Chia-Jung Chuang of Chinese Taipei.
Claire Curran, 29, has been suffering hip problems and with her defeat in the mixed doubles she felt she should move on and retire.
Claire Curran said: "I've lived and breathed the game for 20 years so it's a bit sad."
And Claire Curran added: "It's not the way I wanted it to end - I wanted to finish on centre court on Sunday but it's not to be.
"When you come to Wimbledon you have to aspire to get as far as possible so I'm disappointed to lose in the second round."
Claire Curran may have retired but she still wants to make an impact on the sport of tennis, and she also said: "It's time to put my energies into other things. Maybe continuing with tennis and one day being part of trying to turn British tennis around."
