At Italian Open Martina Hingis wins first title in four years
Martina Hingis beat Dinara Safina and won her first title in over four years with a victory at the final of the Italian Open in Rome on Sunday.
Martina Hingis, who returned to tennis in January after a three-year break, won 6-2 7-5.
Martina Hingis had a nervous second set, letting a 4-1 lead slip and wasting two match points on Safina's serve at 5-3 and the Swiss player was pegged back but she broke again for 6-5 and saved four break points before finally winning the game.
Martina Hingis' last tournament win came with a triumph over Monica Seles in Tokyo in February, 2002.
"I never thought I'd be here again," said Martina Hingis.
"But they say never give up hope and keep fighting, and here I am. It's just great to be back on top of the game," Martina Hingis added.
Martina Hingis returned to the Tokyo final this year, where she lost badly to Elena Dementieva, but in general her comeback has been better than was expected.
Martina Hingis looks likely to return to the top 15 in the world rankings on Monday, and there's the possibility of her being in the forthcoming French Open.
