Andre Agassi wants to buy Bjorn Borg's Wimbledon trophies
Andre Agassi is hoping to buy Bjorn Borg's Wimbledon trophies when they are put up for sale at auction.
49-year-old Bjorn Borg has financial difficulties and has decided to
sell the trophies and two rackets, including the one he used when he
beat John McEnroe in 1980.
"The only way you should have one is if you win it, not buy one," Bjorn Borg said.
"The thought of a Wimbledon trophy being in the hands of somebody with a lot of money is upsetting," he added.
Bjorn Borg was triumphant at Wimbledon five times between 1976 and
1980, as well as winning six other Grand Slam titles before he retired
from the sport aged 26.
Auctioneers Bonhams have said the special nature of the items offered
for sale has made it hard to give an estimate on price, but think that
they could bring in as much as £200,000.
Former Wimbledon champion Jimmy Connors thinks that the All-England
Club should buy the trophies back from Bjorn Borg, and give him the
option of buying them back from them in the future. And Andre Agassi
also agreed that Wimbledon should help Bjorn Borg out.
"I think there's a lot of people who could step up to help for sure -
Wimbledon being one and myself another," Andre Agassi said.
