American tennis star Andy Roddick beats Roger Federer

andy roddick American tennis star and defending champion Andy Roddick defeated Roger Federer and won the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne.

Andy Roddick, 24, beat the world number one 6-2 3-6 6-3, but he still remains officially 1-12 against Roger Federer because the match only counts as an exhibition.

The Australian Open is starting at Melbourne Park on Monday.

World number six Andy Roddick was in command of the game early on due to his powerful serve and he broke Roger Federer in the fifth and seventh games.

"It really needs to be done on a big stage," Andy Roddick said afterwards.

"But that said, it is nice, my game's going pretty well. I feel good going into the Open.

"My returns are working well and that will get me some looks at some breaks," Andy Roddick added.
