A shocked Maria Sharapova loses to Dinara Safina
Russian tennis star Dinara Safina made a very impressive comeback and shocked fourth seed Maria Sharapova when she was victorious and reached the French Open quarterfinals on Sunday.
Dinara Safina looked ready to be beaten when her fellow Russian went rapidly into a 5-1 lead in the deciding set but Safina held fast and some tough play coupled with her rival's increasingly faltering performance earned the 14th seed a 7-5 2-6 7-5 win.
Dinara Safina will now face yet another Russian player, Svetlana Kuznetsova, in the last eight.
Maria Sharapova, meanwhile, had missed out on a chance to make her third appearance in the last eight in Paris.
"I did the best I could. I had the chance to be in the quarter-finals and did not take it," Maria Sharapova said.
"She picked up her game a little bit and mine went down. All of a sudden you start thinking. You go into a different world and you make dumb decisions," Maria Sharapova added.
A happy Dinara Safina said: "I tried to make her run, to look for the lines. I was enjoying every point."
