Andy Roddick beats a furious Marat Safin in Melbourne
Tennis star Andy Roddick defeated 2005 champion Marat Safin and has ousted the Russian player from the Australian Open on a humid night in Melbourne.
Andy Roddick's score was 7-6 (7-2) 2-6 6-4 7-6 (7-2) in a match that lasted more than three hours, in which an angry Marat Safin exchanged words with the umpire over line calls and as to whether the court was suitable for play after rain.
Marat Safin, had started complaining about flash photography from the crowd in the first set, and he became even angrier during the second set, but he was still able to be beating Andy Roddick 6-2 at that stage of the game.
Marat Safin seemed to be actually benefiting from being fired up with anger and appeared to be on top at the start of the third set too but after slipping on the court he hurt his fingers and things really started to go against him.
Andy Roddick took the third set 6-4, and at the changeover before the fourth set it began to rain. The roof on the Rod Laver Arena was closed, and the court mopped up.
However, when the umpire called "Time" only Andy Roddick was ready to resume play.
Marat Safin complained that the court was too wet for them to play, and was officially cautioned when he was seen to swear.
"I was so disappointed with the officials. I can't describe how I feel," Marat Safin said and furious with the officials and their opinions, he added:
"They have been so pathetic on this subject. It was a joke.
"I really am just so disappointed, they are so blind, they don't want to see anything, and I'm going to say it in front of everybody because it's a nonsense for me."
