Swimmer Sharron Davies upsets animal-rights groups
British swimmer Sharron Davies, MBE, who in the past has won both gold and silver medals, is currently under fire by animal-rights groups who are disgusted that she has chosen to help promote turkey products made by Bernard Matthews.
Sharron Davies, 44, has a second career as a BBC television presenter and is the patron for charities for disabled children and fitness. But now animal-rights organisations say that she risks tarnishing her good reputation by promoting Bernard Matthews products after his company has been in the news before for animal cruelty.
Two employees of Bernard Matthews were tried last September last year after an animal-rights campaigner from the Hillside Animal Sanctuary filmed them playing "baseball" with living turkeys.
The accused men, Daniel Palmer, 27, and Neil Allen, 30, both of Dereham, Norfolk, both admitted ill treating birds at a Bernard Matthews factory farm in Norfolk and were ordered to carry out 200 hours of community service.
However, Sharron Davies is reported to have said she is "proud" to help promote Bernard Matthews' products.
