Swimmer Mark Foster heads British squad

markfoster Mark Foster heads a 46-strong British squad at the four-day European Short Course Championships which start in Trieste, Italy, on Thursday.

Mark Foster will be bidding to retain his 50m freestyle and butterfly titles.

Olympic and World Championship bronze medallist David Davies will also be competing while several younger swimmers will get their chance to shine.

Dave Champion, the squad's head coach, sees the event as a guide to form ahead of next year's Commonwealth Games.

"We want to use the European Championships as a springboard into 2006 and the fierce competition we shall face as home nations at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

"It's important we have a good meet to give us the impetus going forward."
