Swimmer Leisel Jones sets new world record
Swimmer Leisel Jones broke her own world record by winning the women's
200m breaststroke at the Australian Commonwealth Games trials in
Melbourne on Wednesday.
Leisel Jones won in a record time of two minutes, 20.54 seconds, and
beat the time she set at the 2005 World Championships in Montreal by
1.18 seconds.
Leisel Jones is the third Australian to set a record in as many days in Melbourne.
Libby Lenton regained the women's 100m freestyle record while Jade Edmistone lowered her 50m-breaststroke mark.
Jade Edmistone set a new 50m-breaststroke record with 30.31 in Monday's heats.
Leisel Jones won the 100m/200m breaststroke double in Montreal to end her frustrating run of near misses in major events.
Leisel Jones, now aged 20, won two silver medals at the Sydney 2000 Olympics when aged just 14.
Leisel Jones also claimed breaststroke silver and bronze at the 2003
world championships as well as silver in the 200m breaststroke at the
Athens Olympics.
