Scottish swimmer Caitlin McClatchey beats Libby Lenton for gold
Scottish swimmer Caitlin McClatchey beat Australian Libby Lenton to
claim an incredible gold medal in the women's 200m freestyle.
20-year-old Caitlin McClatchey was victorious over favourite
Libby Lenton, who had targeted a record of seven golds, in the final
metres to win the race and set a new Games record.
Caitlin McClatchey finished in one minute 57.25 seconds and Libby Lenton back in 1:57.51.
English swimmer Mel Marshall took bronze in an impressive performance and Joanne Jackson, also from the UK, was sixth.
Libby Lenton was in the lead when they turned for the final length but
she wasn't able to stop the Scottish swimmer overtaking her and Caitlin
McClatchey grabbed the gold a year after she had won a bronze medal
over 400m at the World Championships in 2005.
Caitlin McClatchey is going for gold again in her specialist 400m on
Monday, and she said: "It means so much to win a gold medal for
Scotland.
"It's just fantastic. I didn't expect to win the 200m.
"I knew Libby and Mel were going to go out hard and finish strongly so
I just tried to stay on their shoulders and come back at them at the
end."
