Dutch champion swimmer Inge de Bruijn retires from swimming
Four-time Olympic champion swimmer Inge de Bruijn from the Netherlands has announced that she is retiring from swimming.
Born in Barendrecht, Zuid-Holland, Dutch swimmer Inge de Bruijn said:"My career is over," and she added: "It can't get any better. I'm at the ceiling and see no more challenges. I'm 33 - in swimming that's a grandmother."
Inge de Bruijn, who lives in Eindhoven, had not taken part in any major swimming events since the 2004 Athens Olympics, and has chosen to end her career on a high note with eight Olympic medals overall.
Inge de Bruijn won three at the 2000 Sydney Games, where her performance was incredible and she claimed gold medals in the 50-metre freestyle, 100 free and 100 butterfly with a silver in the women's 4x100 free relay on top.
Inge de Bruijn still holds the 50 free and 100 butterfly world records, which were both won in 2000 at Sydney, and she was a world champion a very impressive five times.
