Australian swimmer Libby Lenton loses her world record
Australian swimmer Libby Lenton has lost her 100m freestyle world record due to the fact that the mixed relay race, held three weeks ago, and that she was a contestant for, was considered an unofficial event and so her result didn't count.
Libby Lenton, 22, who won the 100m freestyle and four other gold medals at this year's world championships in Melbourne, had very impressively finished in 52.99 seconds in the first leg of a 4x100m relay race between Australia and America held in Sydney.
A very disappointed Libby Lenton said: "The disappointment can take nothing away from the fact I now know I can swim under 53 seconds,
"I will continue to strive to improve every aspect of my swimming."
Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA), swimming's governing body, wouldn't accept the new record, because it claimed that it was not an approved event.
Swimming Australia chief executive Glenn Tasker said: "It is an unfortunate situation and our hearts go out to Libby," and he added: "It was a truly amazing performance from an amazing young Australian swimmer."
