Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe pulls out of Commonwealth Games
Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games
after not getting better from bronchitis and a chest infection he has
been suffering.
"It's very frustrating, it's very disappointing," said Ian Thorpe, who
has not been a contestant at international level since the 2004 Athens
Olympics.
Ian Thorpe, 23, had taken four gold medals at the 1998 Commonwealths in
Kuala Lumpur followed by a record six at Manchester in 2002 and he
planned to compete in five events at the 2006 Games, which start next
week.
Ian Thorpe has been suffering from chest problems for the last month
but couldn't take any medicine that could have cleared up the infection
because the drugs are on the prohibited list.
Craig Stevens will be the replacement for Ian Thorpe in the Australian
team, which had already lost long-distance ace swimmer Grant Hackett.
