Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe may retire

ian thorpeFive-time Olympic champion Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe could be about to announce his retirement.

A news conference in Sydney on Tuesday was expected to confirm Ian Thorpe's withdrawal from next March's World Championships, however, reports are now suggesting that he may use the event as an opportunity to reveal that he will be quitting the sport.

Ian Thorpe, 24, who has had problems due to illness and injury, has not taken part in a major event since the 2004 Olympics and his long period away has affected his training in the build-up to next month's Australian national trials in Brisbane next month, which if he misses them, he will not be eligible for the 2007 Melbourne World Championships.

"He's had a long road back. It's been tougher than we thought, so we'll get together in the next 48 hours to make a decision," said Ian Thorpe's coach Milt Nelms.

Ian Thorpe recently relocated to Los Angeles and there have been doubts about whether he still has the same motivation he once had.
