Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe hopeful for Commonwealth Games
Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe is hoping to participate in the
Commonwealth Games after announcing that his mystery chest problem is
starting to get better.
Ian Thorpe, 23, has not been a contestant at international level since the Athens Olympics in 2004.
"It's actually the best I've felt in a while, the antibiotics are starting to work," said Ian Thorpe.
Ian Thorpe has not able to take medication, which could help clear up
the problem because the drugs are banned and he has been tested for
glandular fever, chronic fatigue syndrome and whooping cough to find
out what the ailment is.
Ian Thorpe is due to race in the 100m and 200m freestyle as well as in
three relays but could cut back if his health is still in doubt.
Ian Thorpe, who had won six gold medals at the 2002 Commonwealths, has
already withdrawn from the 400m freestyle so he can concentrate on the
100m and 200m.
If Ian Thorpe did withdraw, it could be of benefit to English swimmer
Simon Burnett and England head coach Ian Turner says Ian Thorpe's
pulling out of the Games would be a blow to the event.
