Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe has bronchitis
Australian swimming star Ian Thorpe is suffering from bronchitis and
this has come at a really bad time seeing as next month's Commonwealth
Games are coming up soon.
But Ian Thorpe's manager David Flaskas said the five- times Olympic
gold medallist was hoping to return to the water within 48 hours.
"To lose almost a week (of preparation) at this stage is not ideal by any means," he said on ABC radio.
And Ian Thorpe's coach Tracey Menzies said: "Any time out of the water
is not good, especially when the problem is viral. He's just had no
energy."
David Flaskas denied there were plans to make further cuts on Ian
Thorpe's schedule for the Games in Melbourne, which begin on 15 March.
Ian Thorpe, 23, had already sacrificed the 400m freestyle event, in
which he is the reigning Olympic champion, to concentrate his efforts
on the 100m and 200m freestyle.
Ian Thorpe won the 100m and 200m freestyle events at the Commonwealth
trials in January in his first competitive swim since the 2004
Olympics, but the times, by his high standards, were not good and Ian
Thorpe said it was one of the most disappointing moments of his career.
